The engine of the ensemble. Ben provides the essential texture and drive that rounds out the Big Horse sound. By masterfully locking in with the percussion, he creates the rhythmic "wall of sound" necessary for authentic classic rock and country. A seasoned pro who understands that great music is built on a solid foundation, Ben ensures the band’s energy never wavers from the first note to the final encore.
Ben’s playing is defined by a deep reverence for the titans of the electric guitar, drawing his primary inspiration from Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. From Clapton, Ben has cultivated a refined sense of "Slowhand" phrasing and melodic blues-rock precision, while the raw, experimental energy and soulful expression of Hendrix fuel his more dynamic performances. By blending Clapton’s fluid sophistication with Hendrix’s boundary-pushing spirit, Ben brings a versatile, high-octane edge to every Big Horse Band set.
Ben’s entry into the world of music was driven as much by a sense of personal style as it was by sound. While many of his peers were joining the school ranks, Ben knew early on that a traditional marching band uniform was not in his future. Determined to forge his own path, he decided that his best move was to find an instrument that the marching band didn't use. This rebellious desire to avoid the "marching band outfit" led him straight to the electric guitar, trading the plume and polyester for the grit and freedom of rock 'n' roll. That early instinct for independence now fuels his high-energy performances as a member of the Big Horse Band.
Ben brings a seasoned perspective and a steady hand to the stage, with a musical journey that spans over 30 years of playing. His decades of experience on the fretboard have allowed him to develop a versatile style that anchors the band’s guitar section with both grit and grace. Beyond his musical contributions, Ben is a proud veteran who served with honor in the United States Army. The discipline and dedication he refined during his military service are now channeled into every performance.
One of the standout highlights of Ben’s three-decade career was taking the stage at the legendary Stone Balloon. Known for hosting some of the biggest names in rock history, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for Ben to showcase his Clapton and Hendrix-inspired style. Playing at such an iconic institution solidified his experience performing in high-energy environments where the expectations for musicianship are at their peak. Today, Ben brings that same "big stage" energy and professional poise to every Big Horse Band performance.
Ben brings a practical, no-nonsense approach to his sound, focusing on the performance rather than getting caught up in gear specifics. Utilizing a variety of professional equipment, he relies on his ears and his three decades of playing experience to dial in the right tone for each song. This flexibility allows him to adapt seamlessly to any stage setup, whether it's a small private event or a large outdoor festival.
